Matthew, Mark and Luke record two significant events at the death of Jesus that allows us to understand what life would be like without Christ.
1. Darkness occurred for three hours and all light was gone. Without Christ we have no light -we are in darkness. The physical darkness that day represented a much deeper spiritual darkness that occurs without the “Son”.
2. The curtain in the Temple was torn down the middle. The Temple had three parts and the curtain separated the area where all people could come from the Most Holy place where the Ark of the Covenant and God’s presence rested. When the curtain tore it was a symbol of all barriers being removed between God and humanity. Jesus death removed the barrier so that ALL can approach God.
“By this time it was about noon, and darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock.” “The light from the sun was gone. And suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn down the middle.” Luke 23: 44-45 NLT
